Der unheimliche Weg hat mich direkt von der ersten Sekunde an gehabt. Was wohl einerseits daran liegt, dass ich die Bücher, speziell die Hörbucher, von Agatha Christie liebe. Aber es war auch hier der Anfang des Buches der mich nochmal speziell gepackt hat.

Das Buch wird aus der Sicht von Hilary Craven und Mr Jessop erzählt. Susanne Schroeder und Peter Veit hauchen beiden Charakteren Leben ein und es war wirklich super zum zuhören.

Es beginnt mit Mr Jessop, einem Geheimagenten, der herausfinden möchte warum in letzter Zeit so viele Wissenschaftler verschwinden.
Hilary gerät nur durch Zufall in das Ganze mit hinein. Sie sieht der gerade verstorbenen Ehefrau eines Wissenschaftlers sehr ähnlich. Das Gespräch in dem Mr Jessop sie überzeugt ihm zu helfen war wirklich interessant.

Von da aus sind wir die meiste Zeit bei Hilary wie sie versucht sich für jemand anderen auszugeben und dabei selbst in Gefahr gerät.

Agatha Christie versucht hier mal etwas anderes. Es hat etwas von einem Spionage Roman (oder wie man das nennen würde). Und zuerst ist es mir nichtmal wirklich aufgefallen. (Ich möchte hier nicht zu viel verraten)

Was aber gleich geblieben ist, ist wie sehr ich ihren Schreibtstil liebe! Auch in diesem Buch beschreibt sie die Charaktere auf unbarmherzig ehrliche Weise. Und doch behalten ihre Bücher immer dieses unterschwellige Gefühl von: Eigentlich ist letztendlich alles in Ordnung!
Zwischendurch ist das Buch auch wirklich witzig.

Hilary ist clever und ich hatte wirklich Spaß ihr auf ihrem Abenteuer zu folgen. Und das Ende hat mich auch durchaus zufiredengestellt. Es gibt natürlich ganz nach Agatha Christie Art die große Aufklärung am Ende, etwas was ich wirklich gerne hab.

English review: Destination Unknown

Destination Unknown had me hooked right from the first second. Which is partly because I love the books, especially the audiobooks, by Agatha Christie. But it was also the beginning of the book that intrigued me right of the bat.

The book is told from the point of view of Hilary Craven and Mr Jessop.
It starts with Mr Jessop, a secret agent, who wants to find out why so many scientists are disappearing lately.
Hilary gets into the whole situation by coincidence/accident. She looks very similar to the recently deceased wife of a missing scientist. The conversation in which Mr Jessop convinced her to help him was really interesting. I don’t wanna say more because .. spoilers.

From there on we spend most of our time with Hilary as she tries to convince everyone she is Olive and suffers from partial memory loss due to an accident. She starts to be in danger herself soon, though.

Agatha Christie tries something different here. It has somewhat of a spy novel. And at first I did not even notice it. (I do not want to reveal too much here, again potential spoilers)

But what remained the same is how much I love her writing style! In this book as well as any other I#ve read of her, she describes the characters in a ruthlessly honest way. No sugarcoating the flaws. And yet her books always keep that underlying feeling of: Actually, everything is fine in the end!

In between, the book is really funny, too.
Hilary is smart and I really enjoyed following her on her adventure. And the end also satisfied me. Of course, just in typical Agatha Christie fashion, there is the big reveal at the end where everything gets explained and we see how everything came to pass, something I really enjoy about her books.

I’m a big fan of hers, so I’m biased. But I would definitely recommend her books.
