The path will be forged in sweat and blood.

Rune, Grey, the shape-shifter Beltran, and wilful vampire, Verida, set out to rescue their friend and mentor, Tate, from the gladiator games.

But first they must navigate the perils of Eon and its warring factions. Each of this band of four carries with them a secret that threatens to tear their group apart from within.

Rune now bears the mark of the promise she made to save Grey’s life–a nixie bubble lodged in her arm that could call her away to do their bidding or spell her death.

Even as their loyalty to their cause and to one another faces its greatest test, Rune’s twin brother Ryker is forging an alliance with their mortal enemy, the powerful sorceress Zio, who has plans of her own for the Venators and Eon. Hearts will be bared, secrets unveiled, and relationships made and destroyed in this stunning new instalment of the Venators series.

This was a journey, let me tell you!! It was so much more than I wished for and I loved every second of it! I went through nearly all the emotions there are and omg I am not okay with the book ending where it does!

But let’s start from the beginning shall we?

“You’re in pain!”
“There are different types of pain. Tonight I’m choosing to endure this one.”

We immediately start with my favourite character Beltran. Oh how I missed him. It’s funny because he definitely has some characteristics that I usually find quite irksome (the whole “we can’t because it will hurt you and you have no choice in the matter” spiel) but in him it works and seems so right and real for how he is. And Rune is his perfect counterpart, and the scene where she did not make him promise? The ice around my heart got a tiny crack at that. They might just make me feel some feelings! Also I love how she doesn’t take any of his defence mechanism and runs (at least not always), she sees them for what they are and decided that she wants to have a say in things, too. Which, yes girl, you go! (She has insecurities and feelings, too though so it’s a work in progress … but still!)

And Grey, oh I struggle with what to think of him. One second I want to slap him senseless for his foolish and self-destructive behaviour and then again … he does something that makes me consider letting him inside my heart anyway. Seriously that boy gives me emotional whiplash! We got some real character development in Legends Rise from him. And some more backstory that explains a lot of his behaviour and yet, I still want to slap him regularly.

As the synopsis says, there are a lot of secrets revealed to one or more other characters and they are all so hypocritical it’s funny! Demanding of everyone else to divulge all their secrets while keeping important ones themselves! It’s honestly quite funny (and unfair! … but mostly funny)

The world and we know about it expands so much in this instalment, the stakes get higher and higher as the different motivations so all the characters get revealed or at least hinted at. And I have to say, as sceptical as I was at first about Eon and I really love reading about this world and all the political manoeuvring, the secrets and conspiracies, the promises and oaths that complicate everything.

Legends Rise it fast-paced and action packed while still taking time to develop the character further, showing us heartbreaking backstories and revealing shocking secrets. I couldn’t have wished for a better combination. The pages flew by and I could get really lost in the world and the plot. The wiring style flows very well and compliments the story well.

What I love most about this series is that is has a big cast of incredibly intriguing side characters that just wait to play a bigger part in the story and reveal their real motives. They are all very distinct, especially the council members and I love seeing their bickering and schemes.
Talking about schemes, being in Beltrans mind when he puts clues together or tries to come up with a new plan is amazing. And the whole end part was … I just wanna give him a hug okay? (Maybe Verida, too (although she could do with a slap to the face, too. Damn her and never telling anyone anything!)

And Zio is definitely and worthy opponent. I’m really admiring her unapologetic villainous scheming. She knows what she wants and how she will play her game. If she can’t beat them directly, let them beat themselves.

All in all, I can definitely this series. It gets better with each and every book and I can’t wait to see how the story will continue!
