It’s been over the mid-year point for quite a few days now but at least I’m on brand with publishing everything late … yay me!
I still wanted to do this post though because I love getting to look back at all the amazing books I’ve read so far (and still want to read).
So without much more rambling from my side … let’s dive right in!
Best book I’ve read so far
It was the first book I read this year and it has remained my absolute favourite book of this year so far! The writing style, the unconventional starting point, the worldbuilding with all the little details that make this world so rich and the banter. Oh, the banter!

Best sequel I’ve read so far
I really can’t pick between the two. They are both so different but soooooo good!
The Die of Death is the perfect sequel and starts introducing heavier themes and I love when middle-grade books do that! It‘s so clever and the worldbuilding is so detailed and punny.
Limited Wish is even better than the first book One Word Kill and I wouldn‘t have thought that possible! I love the science and the characters are all so real, well fleshed out and lovable. I couldn‘t put it down!
New release I haven’t read yet but want to
I admit it. I‘m a huge SJM fan. I just love the way she writes emotions and I always get sucked into her worlds. The only reason I haven‘t read Crescent City yet is that I‘m terrified of the book hangover I‘m sure I‘ll get. Also, I didn‘t really have the time to stop everything and get lost in a 800-page book.
The Wayward Children is a series that completely surprised me with how much I loved it. I always bought books have to be longer for me to really fall in love with. Seanan McGuire showed me how wrong I was and I‘m dying to read Come Tumbling Down. And I literally have no excuse for why I haven’t already …
Most anticipated release for the second half of the year
I’m really looking forward to the release of these three.
Ever since I first saw the cover for Star daughter I was sold. Like … look at that?! But it doesn’t only have a pretty cover, the premise sounds just as awesome! It features Hindu mythology and I’m so excited for it!
I absolutely loved The Poppy War and the only reason I haven’t read The Dragon Republic yet is because I intend to binge the whole series as soon as The Burning od releases to get a full dosage of R.F. Kuang’s brilliance.
I really can’t put into words how excited I am to read Loveless. I’ve read so few books (actually … just two) that have aro or ace rep and the fact that this is ownvoices only makes it that much better?! I’ve heard so many amazing things from a-spec friends and I’m dying over here to get my hands on it! (Also .. I’ve been told is has an enemies-to-lovers sapphic side couple?? 😍)
I really wanted to like Catalyst and not only because I was part of the Blog Tour but because the premise sounded good. Unfortunately, the book was too out there, too much at once for me. And a little bit too … on the nose. I like my books to ask questions more than I like them to answer or tell me what to think and do. Sometimes it definitely works and books like this have a place and an audience, but there are rarely right for me.
This was a surprise because although I was initially incredibly excited to read it when I requested it on NetGalley, I saw very mixed reviews a bit after and procrastinated reading it for that reason. But then I loved it?? It was dark, twisted and oh so good!
It’s not really about the fae though (like it was made to sound by marketing) but more about the sometimes twisted nature of humans, emotions and relationships. The fae were more of a device to look at all those topics and it was brilliantly done imo.
Favourite new author (debut or new to me)
The Wolf of Oren-Yaro by K.S. Villoso
The Court of Miracles by Kester Grant
Anna Undreaming by Thomas Welsh
K.S. Villoso is definitely now in my author hall of fame. I don’t care that I’ve only read one book by her, it was so incredible that she’s a new auto-buy author for me. Loved everything about it (and now I’ll shut up because this is the second time I’ve mentioned it)
I recently read The Court of Miracles and I fell in love with the characters! I was so immersed in the world and the plot and oh how I missed that feeling! Hopefully, I can write w review for it soon-ish (I’m sooo behind on reviews, that’s also the reason all my latest posts are reviews 🙈 and I still have about 5-6 to write soon! Help me pleeeeaase!)
Another one I have to write a review for … like yesterday!! Anna Undreaming is sooo mind-blowingly amazing!! I can’t deal. Which is also why I haven’t written the review yet. I just can’t do it justice … But I will. Soon. I swear! Bully me into doing it pleasE!
Newest favourite character
Will you hit me if I mention The Wolf of Oren-Yaro again? 🥺 She is just soooooooo good!
But if you want to know another character … Toby from Tell the wolves I’m home. He is so supportive and sad and hopeful and I’m crying! (The book is absolutely phenomenal … especially when you like books that rip your heart out)
Book that made me cry
Like I said above … this will definitely make you cry. I cried for the last third of the book. It’s an absolutely beautiful story about grief and finding someone to grief with. About friendship and love and hope and death.
Book that made me happy
Venators: Promises Forged by Devri Walls
I could have mentioned almost all of the books in this post already … but this one specifically made me happy for three reasons:
- I was buddy reading it with Ellie @ Read to Ramble
- It was better than the first book and had all my favourite things from book 1
- Beltran! Just … more Beltran.
Favourite book to film adaptation I saw this year
Umm… I don’t think I’ve watched any book to film adaptation this year? At least I can’t remember one?
Favourite review I’ve written this year
Blog Tour Review + Fav Quotes: The Wolf of Oren-Yaro … I’m sorry?
Wicked as you Wish by Rin Chupeco
I had such a hard time writing this review and sat before a blank page for daaayyys. And then suddenly it clicked and the review got actually pretty long (I tried to shorten it … but didn’t really manage). And I just loved the feeling of suddenly not being able to stop writing about Wicked as you Wish and the characters and my love for them.
Most beautiful book I’ve bought so far this year (or received)
The Court of Miracles by Kester Grant
Dangerous Remedy by Kat Dunn
Bone Crier’s Moon by Kathryn Purdie
Books I need to read by the end of the year
Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng
The Heart Forger by Rin Chupeco
Five Dark Fates by Kendare Blake
Kingdom of Souls by Rena Barron
I wanna read Little Fires everywhere for multiple reasons;
- I got the book from my mom (and she gets grumpy if I take too long to read them 😂)
- I wanna watch the tv series with my mom but obviously only after I’ve read the book
- I adored Celeste Ng’s other book Everything I never told you (Also a gift from my mom)
The Bone Witch is one of my all-time fav books and I neeeeeeeed to continue the series! I really have no clue why I haven’t yet.
Same with Five Dark Fates. If you know me a bit better, you know that I’m a huge fan of the Three Dark Crowns series. And I do know why I haven’T read this one yet … I’M SCARED! It’s the last book, ok? What if I can’t cope with it all being over?!
Kingdom of Souls is not only stunning from the outside but also the inside from all that I’ve heard so far and I’m really looking forward to reading it and dive into the WEst African inspired fantasy world!
How about you? What is a book you’re dying to read? What was your favourite so far? Let me know in the comments, I’m super curious!
